Quinta do Vale Meão, contoured by a vast meander in the Douro River, is a historic estate founded in 1877 by the legendary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira and owned today by her great-great-grandson Francisco Javier de Olazabal. The impressive structure and rich fruit found in the Olazabal Finest Reserve Port is the unique result of a century and a half of experience combined with Quinta do Vale Meão’s coveted old-vine estate vineyards.
The Olazabal family, originally from the Spanish Basque Country, allied itself with the Ferreira family in 1899 following the wedding of Ramon de Olazabal with Maria Luisa Ferreira de Mendoça, grand-daughter of Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, the famous “Ferreirinha”. In 1919 Ramon de Olazabal settled in Portugal and undertook the work until then carried out by his wife’s family, on both the commercial side, as well as on the development of Quinta do Vale Meão. Today the third and
fourth generations of the Olazabals to live in Portugal are at the head of F. Olazabal & Filhos Lda., and make Port and Douro wines at the Quinta, honouring the tradition and endeavour of those who preceded them.
